We are excited to host a number of call-for-scores for the 2024 Symposium of South African Composers! For this year's symposium, we have open calls for performance and recording by Mizar Trio, University of Stellenbosch Symphonic Wind Ensemble (USSWE), the SoSAC Festival Orchestra, and Aurum Cantores.

- Entry fee: Free for all composers.
- Deadline for submission: Friday 02 August 2024. (Update: extended to 05 August 2024)
- Results will be announced: Friday 09 August 2024.
- Age limit: open to all ages.
- Nationality: open to South African citizens and international students currently enrolled at a South African university.
- Selected composers will receive a performance and recording of their work, as well as the opportunity to workshop their music with the respective ensembles.
- Selected composers will receive an all-inclusive festival pass to attend all symposium events.
- Composers are invited to submit one work per category, but may submit works for any of the open categories.

Mizar Trio is a wonderfully novel, contemporary mixed trio ensemble comprising:
Louisa Theart: Flute, Piccolo, Alto Flute Rosamund Ender: Violoncello Dylan Tabisher: Marimba, Vibraphone Mizar specialises in contemporary performance practice, and they invite composers to write new works with a duration of 5-8 minutes for them to perform and record during the 2024 Symposium of South African Composers. For this submission, composers are requested to submit score and parts together. |
The University of Stellenbosch Symphonic Wind Ensemble (USSWE) invites new or existing works for performance during the 2024 Symposium of South African Composers.
Instrumentation includes: Piccolo, Flutes 1+2, Oboe, Eb Clarinet, Clarinet 1+2+3, Bass Clarinet, Alto Sax 1 (doubling: Soprano Sax), Alto Sax 2, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Trumpet 1+2+3, Horn 1+2+3+4, Trombone 1+2, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba Percussion x 4 Duration: 5-8 minutes For this submission, composers are not required to include parts. |
The SoSAC Festival Orchestra, generously supported by Mzansi Philharmonic, invites submission of new or existing works for performance during the 2024 Symposium of South African Composers.
Instrumentation: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, 2 Percussionists Organ, Piano, Harp, Strings (2,2,2,2,1) Duration: 5-8 minutes For this submission, composers are not required to include parts. |
Aurum Cantores is a mixed vocal ensemble (SATB splitting into SSAATTBB. 10 singers), specialising in practices ranging from Renaissance to contemporary Western Choral. Composers are invited to submit works for performance and recording during the 2024 Symposium of South African Composers.
Duration: 2-5 minutes. Language: preferably English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu. Text: Composers should acquire permission to use texts where needed. Optional instruments (choose 1): Piano, Flute, Saxophone, Harp, Uhadi, Cello. Selected works will be workshopped, performed and recorded. |
